This resulted in the start of a long era of consolidation as the Star Union's expansion effectively ceased. In this early stage, the Union encompassed several dozen colonies and was commonly known as the "Federal Star Union." Yet, after a certain amount of time, the humans of the Union had explored and settled most regions of the galaxy that the more stable Void currents present inside the spatial rifts connected. The first of the Star Holders would go on to achieve a status among the people of the Star Union akin to a secular saint for these accomplishments. The Union developed specialized starships and navigation techniques for travelling through the Void, setting up a network of supply stations, gateways and FTL communication arrays along each of the charted spatial rifts commonly known as "the Nexus." The founders of the human federation, the first of the so-called "Star Holders" who served as the Star Union's heads of state, established peace and cooperation among the formerly rival colonies, despite their varying cultures and diverse interests. Called " cosmite" by its discoverers, it soon proved to have myriad applications, and provided the foundations for many new, advanced weapons and other technologies. The federation was founded after the discovery of naturally-occurring spatial rifts or “wormholes” leading from normal space-time into the extradimensional, hyperspatial region dubbed "the Void." Once stabilized through the use of advanced gravitic technologies, these rare conduits allowed human spacecraft to travel through them into the Void and then exit again through another hyperspatial rift to reach distant worlds with a form of faster-than-light (FTL) travel.Īdditionally, such rifts sometimes emitted an unusual transdimensional substance that seemed to be some form of solidified Void energy or could even have come from some dimension beyond the Void. The Star Union originated from a small federation of human colonies that emerged in the early days of the colonization of the galaxy.
